How do special effects people do that thing where they project film or video images onto 3D sets?

water_skipper asks:

Question

I saw this twice in my life--once at the American Museum of Natural History and once at Ripley's Believe It Or Not. I found the company that does this online and they said this device "superimposes and integrates two-dimensional film or video images into three-dimensional sets without any visible screens, mirrors or projection devices." They said it's patented, so it must be pretty sophisticated.

Answer

I couldn't find anything on their web site. Next time they say it's patented, ask for the patent number.
